The protected valley area of the Molenbeek and Kerkesbeek is 33 hectares in size and owned by the province of East Flanders. One half of the nature reserve consists of grassland. The northern lowest part is a wet rough with meadowsweet and sedge. In the middle part, grasslands with foxtail and silvery bloom. In the southern and drier part, glossy oats may occur. The other half of the nature reserve consists of forests with spring flora (forest anemone, snowdrop). In the regularly flooded parts grows willow and alder, on drier parts ash, pedunculate oak, hornbeam and maple. Through appropriate nature management, the European protected habitat type ash-elm forest is restored. In the area lives, among other things, duck, wader. The Moortsele flood zone is part of the Flemish Ecological Network and is (under the name 'Drooghout met Kerkesbeek-Molenbeek valley') European protected as part of the Natura 2000 habitat directive area 'Forests of the southeast of the Zandleemstreek'.
