During the Third Battle of Ypres or the Battle of Passchendaele (1917), a totally destroyed terrain was captured together with the village of Passchendaele. The British called it 'Passiondale' or valley of suffering. The human price was enormous and this is indelibly proven at Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest British military cemetery on the mainland.
The cemetery with 'Missing Memorial' was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and unveiled in 1972. 11,596 Commonwealth soldiers and some German casualties are buried here. On the wall at the back of the cemetery are the names of 34,957 missing soldiers. They were killed after 15 August 1917.
