Wijtschate was in French and British hands until it was captured by the Germans on 1 November 1914 after a heavy bombardment. The next day it was recaptured for a short period by the French 16th Corps and British cavalry, but from that date it remained in German hands until 7 June 1917. After the first day of the mine battle, it remained in British hands until 16 April 1918 when it returned to German hands after six days of fighting. On 28 September, it was finally recaptured by British troops. The cemetery was created after the war by the concentration of scattered graves and the evacuation of small cemeteries around Wijtschate. There are now 1002 Commonwealth deaths and 1 soldier of another nationality commemorated. Of those, 673 are unidentified.
