Dog Hill 3
3200 Gelrode
The protected wooden windmill on the Hondsheuvel is a grain mill and belongs to the standard mill type. It was built in Mechelen in 1667 and was given the name Moedermeule, because it was the largest of three mills that stood together there.
In 1830 Jozef Wuyts bought the mill and had it transferred to Gelrode. After the First World War it became the property of Leopold De Keyser and in 1930 of Joris Borgions. In 1944 the mill was classified.
However, he was not always as finely dressed as he is now. Struck by lightning in 1943, it crumbled into a pile of rubble, which made the owner decide to switch to a mechanical mill. In 1974 the municipality bought the Moedermeule and had it restored two years later. Now you can see the Mother Meule and the miller in full operation on Sundays. The mill house was converted into a tavern.
