The name Grobbendonk is a combination of the Germanic toponyms: grobbe or ditch and donk or sandy accumulation or promontory surrounded by water. Near the old castle of the Lords of Grobbendonk, you can still find such a donk. That the Franks were here is evidenced by the triangular village square.
Even the then common name (Biest) is still used here in colloquial language.
Grobbendonk is known as the center of the diamond industry in the Antwerp Kempen. You will find a Diamond Museum with the history of 'Diamond from mine to jewel', a display on the pioneers of the diamond industry in the Kempen, and a series of copies of world-famous diamonds. At the beginning of Bergstraat (on the left across from the Biest) is the house of one of the founders of the Kempen diamond processing industry; it now serves as a brasserie.
