Over a distance of five kilometers you have to pass four locks on the Herentals-Bocholt canal. The plans to connect the Scheldt, the Meuse and the Rhine via canals have existed for centuries. The projects from the 15th to the 18th century mainly pursued military purposes. The achievements of the 19th century were mainly economically inspired. The implementation of the plans did not always go smoothly.
The geological formation 'Breuk van Rauw' means that the Herentals-Bocholt canal has to overcome a height difference of 15 metres at just five kilometres. Between the Blauwe Kei in Lommel and the canal intersection, no less than four locks are needed to bridge this. The old locks, still in use, are gems of industrial archaeology.
