At the top of the Balenberg the Diest Formation zooms in with the iron sandstone in it. This iron sandstone was created by the weathering of glauconite. Glauconite is a blue- or yellow-green to green mineral: a micca. The name of the mineral is derived from Ancient Greek γλαυκς (glaukos), which means "blue". Surface water with an elevated glauconite content usually contains little life and is remarkably clear and transparent. Large water features are slightly green-blue when visible, so they also make a Mediterranean impression on divers at higher latitudes. Glauconite is a mineral that is very often formed, mainly by weathering of biotite in shallow seawater. It forms only in the vicinity of a coast in warm seawater of shallow depth and is deposited in certain sedimentary environments at reduced conditions.
