't Kristallijn

't Kristallijn, is a socio-cultural initiative of Sibelco for the integration of culture &nature. Located between a completed mining area and an active quarry of Sibelco, it is part of a unique triangle of culture, nature and recreation.

Sibelco considers it a responsibility to maintain a good relationship with its environment and has been pursuing a valued policy of sustainable entrepreneurship and exploitation of its quarries in this area for decades. A policy in which the economy of natural resources is central, and in this vision she wants to highlight the great attention paid to the restructuring of the quarries. She makes it a point of honour to give a unique redevelopment of a reintegration into the landscape. A good example of this is this site around 't Kristallijn.

Garden 't Kristallijn

The site with an area of 39550m² was transformed into a partly public park and hiking trail overlooking the lake on the basis of plans by the renowned landscape architect Jacques Wirtz. In the sandy and poor subsoil, uniform groups of grasses (Miscanthus gracillimus) make an extremely natural, swaying movement. These large grass beds blend in nicely with the surroundings and create the impression that nature itself created them. Even in winter, the gray-beige color of the dry grasses keeps the structure visible.
