The experience of the first years of the war teaches that soldiers with stomach wounds pretty well never pull through, the journey to the hospitals (of which L’Océan in De Panne is the largest and most important) is too long. Infections strike quickly in the far from hygienic circumstances. In 1916 it is decided to set up advance surgical posts, between 2 and 5 kilometers behind the frontline, to enable urgent interventions. The plan worked: 56% of the interventions are successful.
The Sint Jansmolen outpost lies just 1 kilometer from the front and is mobile. It comprises 4 trucks, which are attached to a tent; in a fifth lorry there are operations. There is a waiting room, an operating room, a radiology area and 4 to 6 tents each with 20 beds. Only the red cross on the roof offers some protection.
The post is removed in 1917 because of planned offensives.
