This is the statue of Adrien François Servais. He was born in Halle on 6 June 1807 and died here on 26 November 1866. He was a Belgian cellist and composer, sometimes called "the Paganini of the cello" by his contemporaries. He has been an honorary citizen of the city of Halle since 2007. He received his first music lessons, as well as the love for music, from his father who was a chorister and violinist in the Sint-Martinuskerk 50 m away. In 1837 he was in the Netherlands for the first time. During a court concert in The Hague he was so admired by the Princess of Orange Anna Paulowna that she wanted to introduce him to her brother, Tsar Nicholas I. Servais left in 1839 on a concert trip to Russia, where he performed for the Tsar, among other things. Around 1840 he became the owner of a precious stradivarius cello, perhaps at the hands of Princess Youssoupov in Saint Petersburg.
