During the redevelopment of the Place Verte in Verviers (2020), a small metal box appeared. The inscriptions on the case indicated that it contained a heart. Research from the University of Liège showed this to be correct. According to the inscriptions, it is said to be the heart of Pierre David. Pierre David was mayor of Verviers between 1800 and 1839. That was an exciting pivotal period: the end of French rule, the time of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and the very beginning of Belgium. David is called the first mayor of Verviers, the first after Belgium's independence. The box was not opened and is now the museum of Verviers. The story of a heart under the fountain has long been a city legend. And now it turns out to be more than a legend.
