This square, in the very heart of the "Protected Historical Center" and formerly called "Market Square," is striking for its dimensions and characterized by its steep slope as well as its rustic cobblestone paving.
At the center stands the Perron Fountain, a monument of the Old Regime erected in 1769.
The chronogram recalls that during the time of the prince-abbot of the era, Jacques de Hubin, peace and prosperity reigned in Stavelot. The perron itself, set on four seated wolves, symbolized the sovereignty and independence of the Stavelot state.
The houses lining the square mainly date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Their listed facades form a beautiful ensemble from which an agreeable feeling emanates, primarily due to the multiple shades of gray obtained from the materials used: slate cladding, painted woodwork, white or pearl gray renders,…
Two very beautiful houses are older.
At the bottom of the square, the imposing house with a high roof was built at the request of Jaspar de Susleau in 1694 and became an inn called "La Cour de Londres."
Towards the top of the square, at the corner of Chaumont and Delbrouck streets, the vast residence located there was also built in 1699 by Jaspar de Susleau, Alderman of the High Court and General Collector of the Principality. However, this house became somewhat of a challenge to the Old Regime since Jean-Joseph Delbrouck, a revolutionary citizen, lived there as early as 1771.
