In 1938 the plan arose for a city park in the valley of the Aa. Architect Ritzen drew up the plan. The park was created after a regulation was in force during World War II that allowed the government to claim civil property. With this paper in hand, the city council acquired the land and the 33-hectare park was laid out. During the construction, many unemployed people found temporary jobs and were able to alleviate the hard life in the war years. Thus, the old hay meadows in the valley of the Aa, with the years, became the outdoor property and ornamental garden of all Turnhout residents.
Central to the park is the Monument Pro Patria, designed by the Turnhout sculptor Remy Cornelissen. Since 1956, it has honored the civilian victims, deportees, resistance fighters and political prisoners of World War II. This is also the heart of the park from which four 'veins' or lanes depart. Beautiful wide lanes that are worth a walk through. And actually quite fascinating because the park is actually a large arboretum. Well-known domestic and rare foreign tree species are planted fraternally next to each other here.
In addition to the steam trains, the animal park is also a permanent stopping place for children. Here, well-known and lesser-known animal species happily hop in a large meadow. With some stale bread they are always happy. But there is also room for sports and games in the Stadspark. There are the fit-o-meter, tennis courts, petanque courts, a mini golf course, the sports hall and a multifunctional stadium.
