The Nagelmackers Castle in Angleur

This beautiful residence made of painted bricks and limestone was built in the first quarter of the 18th century for Baron de Horion, lord of Angleur. It was then acquired in the early 19th century by the Nagelmackers family, whose name is still associated with the famous Compagnie des Wagons-lits and its flagship, the Orient Express.
The castle is preceded to the north by a courtyard of honor lined with two wings of outbuildings and closed, on the street side, by a semi-circular gate. It has two levels and seven bays. Its central projecting body of three bays stands out and is topped to the north by a triangular tufa pediment, emblazoned with Nagelmackers-(Dupont?) bearing the dates 1723, 1815, and 1837. Framing the three central bays, the central body also projects compared to the two extreme bays. A staircase provides access to the entrance door topped by a small curved pediment. Large windows, once divided, illuminate the rooms. Under the molded cornice made of wood and stone runs a series of holes for anchoring. The hipped roof is pierced by dormers with curved and triangular pediments and is surmounted by a bell tower. The entire building has undergone a comprehensive redevelopment to house offices in the castle as well as housing in the outbuildings.
Listed as a monument on July 10, 1984.
