These two cemeteries in Zonnebeke form one whole. The small Polygon Wood Cemetery was created during WWI. The war conditions gave the cemetery an irregular ground plan. Butte's New British Cemetery is an extension of Polygon Wood Cemetery. This larger cemetery was only built after the First World War. Bodies of fallen soldiers from the vicinity of Zonnebeke were buried here. 80% are unknown soldiers. You will also find a memorial to the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who lost their lives in and around the Polygon Forest.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is responsible for the maintenance of this cemetery - www.cwgc.org
