Monday, 19 October 1914, the day on which the Germans took Roeselare, is known in the district as 'Schuwe Maandag' or 'Dreadful Monday'.
Invasion
Starting at 1 pm, the Germans subjected Roeselare to a devastating rain of shells from Ardooie, Kachtem and Izegem. After heavy fighting with the French, they eventually took the town. The Germans subsequently took out their rage on the local population because of the resistance they encountered. Roeselare was to be made to pay for the German casualties.
Chaos and caprice
Partly because of this, the taking of Roeselare developed into chaos and capricious acts. Drunken German soldiers set fire to 252 houses and took hostages. One group of captured civilians was shot in the area of De Vierweg, another at a farm opposite the Spanjeschool. In the end, about forty people were killed.
