Description

Today you can cycle peacefully along the Stroroute from Roeselare to Zonnebeke. A forgotten rail connection between Roeselare and Ypres. During the war, this connection was broken by the front line.

A railway across the front
The Allied armies relied on supplies from Ypres and Poperinge. The section of railway in free Belgium was intensively used for this purpose. On the other side of the front, in occupied territory, Roeselare was a logistical hub for the trenches of the German Army.

Storage space at the station
The railway carried troops, armaments, rations, spares and dead and wounded soldiers. All the repaired goods were carefully stored until they were returned to the front.
