The Small Seminary, one of the oldest places of learning in Belgium, opened its doors on this spot in 1806. During the war, its buildings were used as a German field hospital.
The Small Seminary acquires a different function
Not long after the planned start of the school year, the buildings were taken over as temporary accommodation for soldiers. Initially, this was for Allied soldiers, but the school buildings soon became a German field hospital.
The war makes education difficult
The Small Seminary was not the only place to be used by the German occupiers. All the abbeys and convents in Roeselare were requisitioned, as was the hospital. The numerous other schools of the town were also requisitioned.
