The eagle fern is the largest fern in Flanders. The plant is considered a weed by many because it can hinder the regeneration of a forest. Its large leaves take away a lot of light from the forest floor, making it harder for young trees to germinate. You might be able to discover the origin of its name with some imagination: just picture the leaves of the ferns as the spread wings of an eagle. And of course, the eagle is the largest among birds, just as the eagle fern is the largest among ferns!
