The Schalïenhof

Description

Deerlijkstraat number 21. Historically valuable farm so-called "Schaliënhof", located 700 meters northwest of the old church. In the beginning of the 17th century a farm is already mentioned on this site, it was a rather modest farm of a cijnsboer located on interest lands of the lordship of Vichte. It is mentioned in the interest book (1605) as a "behuusde hofstede metten lande". The farm was purchased around 1640 by Frans de Cocq, the later clerk of Vichte. The de Cocq family was powerful and influential and had a lot of land ownership. His son Frans (bailiff of Vichte, lord of Steenbergen and "donaet and fellow brother" of the Order of Malta) had the farm converted into an imposing whole with entrance gate and ramparts at the end of the 17th century. The real estate agent of the gatehouse bears the date of construction "1693", a stucco ceiling in the house bears the date "1698". In 1760 the farm was owned by Frans Willem van Veren. In the French period, Father Van Nuvel went into hiding in the buildings, in 1815 she was occupied by mayor Gekiere.Fully depicted on the Ferraris map (1770-1778) as a walled farm with the recognizable volumes of the house, the barn and stable wing to the south. Same configuration on the Atlas of Local Roads (ca. 1846) with almost rectangular walls. Now partly walled 17th-century farmhouse (filled in to the north) with semi-closed arrangement consisting of whitewashed brick components under tiled gable roofs. East yard access via brick bridge and gatehouse. To the north, the house, to the west the barn, stable wing to the south and later erected (early 19th century) utility building to the east. House. Whitewashed anchored brick building, six bays under slate hipped roof broken by three dormers. Rectangular window openings with renewed joinery. Right travee with slightly arched window opening in a frame of white natural stone. Retained doors; central door in a decorative frame and with oval skylight. Second door (right) in a frame of white natural stone with drip molding. Brick pavement in front (herringbone motif). Whitewashed, partly closed rear façade with preserved wooden door, some modified wall openings with renewed joinery. Preserved layout and largely preserved interior, notable by two preserved stucco ceilings dated 1698 and traces of the coat of arms of the bailiff family de Cocq. Whitewashed brick, preserved wooden clung gate with date "1693" in decoartively elaborated broker. Front with niche with statue of saints. Double cross barn with traces of half-timbering.
