At the height of the Schelde bend, the natural landscape is still very well observable. The Schelde is a tidal river, and as a result, zones along it regularly become flooded. These zones are the mudflats and salt marshes. The mudflat is the area that is flooded with every regular tide, thus twice a day. The salt marsh is the area that is only occupied by the Schelde during spring tide or very high tide. The mudflats and salt marshes form the basic building blocks of this habitat. They are abundant in food and offer numerous breeding and resting sites. Plants such as rough bulrush, marsh milk thistle, and sea bulrush grow here, and species like the bluethroat and reed warbler live here.
