The Rivierenhof was once a private castle area, but has been a provincial domain since 1921. Today, the area not only has a historical value, nature also gives it a special wealth. The marshy zone around the Groot Schijn, the grasslands, deciduous forests and stately avenues offer a wide variety of habitats for many species. Many tree species have also been planted in the park because of their decorative appearance. However, many of these trees are not native and in principle do not belong in the landscape. Examples include the atlas cedar, the swamp oak, the tulip tree and the giant sequoia. Today they give the area an educational function: visitors will find plant species that they would otherwise never see here.
