For centuries, this landscape was either a polder or an inundation area. The latter is an area that could be used as a defense in the event of wars or enemy invasions by flooding it. Despite the large-scale development of the port, some historical remnants of this past can still be found today. In 1914, Antwerp's defence line was expanded with a new belt of forts in the agglomeration and intermediate fortifications on the inner belt of forts. Between the fort of Merksem and fort Lillo, a number of capponières, or small forts, were built along the Verlegt Schijns. In the end, the northern defences were never completed, so only three forts were realized. These still exist today and now also have an ecological function as a winter dormitory for butterflies and insects, among other things.
