De Zouten is a narrow elevated strip of open space between Berendrecht and the Kanaaldok. The name refers to the period in which the villages were still located in the Scheldt valley. This was the limit to which the brackish (salty) Scheldt water could reach. The Salts thus mark the edge of the natural floodable Scheldt area. The Zoutedijk now runs along the area, which forms an attractive route for cyclists and walkers. The area has evolved into a wet rough, characterized by a combination of grass, herbs and shrubs. In this habitat you can find species that once belonged to the original swampy landscape, such as the small fire butterfly and the bluethroat.
