A while ago, a large part of this landscape was redesigned, an intervention to compensate nature for the port project at the marshalling yard in Antwerp North. The compensation project will be realised in two phases. This redevelopment was therefore only the first phase and covers 70 ha. In this area two puddles were created with a reed habitat around it. The intention is to feed these puddles with seepage water: groundwater that comes to the surface naturally. For the time being, however, the puddles are still largely filled by rainwater. In the meantime, the reed habitat has already developed well and we already find many of the species for which the compensation project was carried out. Examples are: reed warbler, squatter, crested duck, ordered grebe, spoonbill and bittern. They find breeding and hiding places between, among other things, the rough piping and sea beet. From the vantage point there is a nice view over the area.
