The hamlet of Zandvliet was already mentioned in writings from 1135. The name refers to a navigable creek through the sandy outcrop of the Kempen Plateau. For a long time, this remained a polder village, until in 1622 the Spanish military strategist Spinola commanded the construction of a rampart around the village as protection against Dutch incursions. Since then, Zandvliet has served as a fortress, but around the time of the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century, the rampart fell into significant disrepair. Traces of it can still be observed in the landscape at the edges of the historic village core. The Conterscherp largely follows the star-shaped pattern of the former fortress.
