Ecological connection

The diversity of soil types in the Groene Bedding provides a great variety of plants (more than 450 species reported), which in turn results in a rich diversity of other organisms. In addition, the ring berms serve a crucial function as an ecological connection between nearly all green areas on the outskirts of Antwerp. This connection is important not only for special plant and animal species but also for more common species that are increasingly trying to establish themselves in the city. For example, mammals such as the fox, hare, polecat, hedgehog, and weasel take advantage of this. The smaller species (e.g., beetles and butterflies) that do the same are nearly impossible to count. The continuity of the landscape is important for this.
