The original name of the area, namely 'Ter Rivieren', refers to the location of the domain on the river Groot Schijn. The original domain dates back to the16th century. In the17th century, the area was owned by the Jesuits for almost a century. When the order was dissolved, the domain was sold publicly in 1773 and came into the hands of a banker. Together with the Sterckshof, almost the entire area was redeveloped in 1776. Beech and linden avenues were planted, a mirror-shaped pond was created and all kinds of aesthetic and playful green elements such as ornamental gardens and a maze were laid out. The mirror pond is located in the heart of the park, at the intersection of two structuring axes, one in the north-south direction and one in the east-west direction.
