Saint Godelieve Museum

For years, Gistel has been synonymous with Godelieve and her unfortunate fate. In the blessed year 1070, the young lady was strangled here on the orders of her husband Bertolf, the then lord of Gistel. In the Sint-Godelievemuseum in the quiet Abbey Ten Putte, the place of misfortune centuries ago, you can learn everything about Godelieve and her Bertolf. Highlights include the tombstone of abbess Godelieve Payers from 1553 (rediscovered at an antique shop in Paris) and the Godelieve altarpiece, a triptych from the 16th century. Also noteworthy is the reproduction of the painting created by James Ensor about the Saint Godelieve procession.

The striking story of Godelieve can also be discovered through a film. A space has been arranged as a cinema in the abbey building of Abbey Ten Putte for this purpose.

Further on the abbey site, you can visit the dome chapel with the well of miraculous water, the church, the devotion chapel, the crow chapel, and the prison.
