A first, largely wooden town hall was built in 1241, when Damme was still a harbor and the Zwin had not yet silted up. The ground floor of the building served as a warehouse for goods and the aldermen's bench occupied the upper floor.
The current stone town hall was built between 1464 and 1468. The city council meetings still take place here every month in the Vierschaere. The civil wedding ceremonies of the Damse community take place in the Council Chamber. Various events and exhibitions take place in the halls of the town hall.
A double vaulted staircase with lions and four corner turrets decorate the front facade. A carillon of 39 bells is installed in the tower. Also notable are the city clock from 1459 and a sundial.
The six facade statues mainly represent the counts of Flanders .
