Of the three mills that once stood in Aalbeke, only one remains, but it is very special: according to some experts, it dates from 1717 and, at almost 300 years, is the oldest in West Flanders. It has been protected as a monument since 1944.
The Hoogmolen is a standard or stake mill. This means that the mill box literally rests on a 60 to 80 centimeter thick stake and is turned entirely to the wind. In the case of the Hoogmolen, that stake is stuck in a closed stone base. The blades are 24 meters long.
Exactly 250 years, from 1717 to 1967, the Hoogmolen grinds grain. The city of Kortrijk bought the site in 1980 and in 1994-1995 the mill was restored and made grindable again.
You can visit the mill, but it is currently being restored. It will reopen in the course of 2015.
