A name stone marks the Three Canals site in Merkem. There are no permanent remnants of WWI here, but in 1914-1918 there was an important outpost on this spot. In November 1914, French Zouaves and German soldiers fought for this place. The German attack failed thanks to the cry of a captured Zouave: "Tirez donc au nom de Dieu, ce sont les Boches!". De Boot, an ecological barge, is now docked at the Drie Grachten site.
