Managed by the Lefevre family for three generations, Altan is an artisanal tannery. You can also visit the factory. During the tour, you will learn all about the production process and about the authentic machines, some of which have been around for more than a hundred years.
In 1934, Adolphe Lefevre founded Tannery Altan - the name is an abbreviation of Adolphe Lefevre Tanneries. In 1945 he moved his business to its current location, in the Looierijstraat.
Altan mainly works for the shoe industry: after the Second World War, for example, it dyed leather imported from India. Later, the company made shoe liners from dog skins imported from Great Britain. These are the heydays: the ten workers process up to 1200 dog skins per week.
Today, Altan still supplies leather skins to individuals and companies - the specialty is ostrich leather.
The company is happy to welcome groups. A guided tour takes about two hours.
