The area is a splendid example of the coexistence of nature and technology. The fact that the Gulke Putten has been preserved as a heathland area is related to the Radio-Electronic Center in Wingene-Ruiselede. The surroundings of the transmission towers had to be kept open and free of trees. Therefore, mowing and logging were done extensively to preserve the heath. The transmitting station is still in operation, while the old radio transmission installations are protected as industrial archaeology. Those who wish to explore deeper into the nature reserve can do so in a group led by a guide or through the walks for Natuurpunt members. www.natuurpunt.be
