The ponds are the trademark of the Wijers. They get their water from the Laambeek and the Echelbeek via a system of stairs and a network of supply and drainage ditches. Some ponds are still used for fish farming. The banks often have steep walls and there is hardly any water and bank vegetation. The larger ponds (such as the Zarenvijver near Terlaemen Castle) still have a fairly natural structure due to their size. They are a natural habitat for waterfowl such as grebes, grebes and ducks of all kinds. Nothing has happened on other ponds for years, some can even only be recognized by remnants of dikes and dry supply and drainage ditches. Along the Laambeek, Limburgs Landschap vzw manages various nature reserves such as Thiewinkel, Kolveren, Laambroeken with here and there ponds that are oriented for nature.
