It may be difficult for you to imagine today, but the Neder-Scheldt flowing past you here was filled in in 1960 to create a parking lot. More than a thousand years of history of Ghent was buried in the blink of an eye under earth and stone. But not everyone accepted this. The reign of the car gradually faced resistance. The city center was made car-free, in favor of pedestrians and cyclists. Furthermore, there was a desire to bring water back to the Reep, as it had always been. And so it happened! The ground was reopened. The quay walls were restored. And in 2018, the Scheldt was once again channeled to the Leie to loud cheers.
