The Duivelskuil in Mol is one of the most bewitched places in the Kempen. According to legend, the devil was flying here with his when he was surprised by a thunderstorm. A well-aimed lightning bolt pulled him out of the air. Since then, he has lived in this unique fen and lurks careless visitors to pull them into the water with his hook. As if that weren't enough, there would be sunken bells on the bottom that you can sometimes hear ringing.
The explanation may lie in bubbling and spontaneously igniting methane gas that scared passers-by. Others saw in the flames the misguided lights of unbaptized children who had died.
Either way, the natural value of this swamp is exceptional.
Oh yes, around the Devil's Pit still grows gale, also called the lavender of the Kempen. This is how nature gets that devilish sulfur smell under control.
