The border post is located near the Lepelstraat, a former peat canal.
A few years ago, there was a large information board at the border post with information about the wire of death and the piece of no man's land that was built here during the First World War.
The Wire, also known as the Wire of Death or Death Fence, was a 332-kilometre-long wire fence that was built by the German occupiers of Belgium during the First World War along the border between occupied Belgium and the neutral Netherlands.
The barricade was under deadly electrical voltage and was intended to prevent war volunteers and German deserters from fleeing Belgium.
In order to shorten the total length of the barricade, the national border was deviated from several times. This created areas that lay between the Draad and the national border, a kind of no man's land.
The inhabitants of these areas had to seek a connection to the Netherlands for their necessities.
