It was here in this mine shaft, now located on a private domain under a concrete slab, that one descended 322 meters in 1878. Here, Gustave Fagès would stumble upon a cran and discover "tree stumps with gold." However, these were bones of iguanodons impregnated with pyrite. These iguanodons were and are of immeasurable value. Did you know that during World War I in 1916, the Germans themselves resumed digging for iguanodons in Bernissart? However, the Belgians put up resistance: they sabotaged the pumps and caused intentional collapses. After two years of drilling, the Germans were 20 meters away from the cran, but the end of the war forced them to retreat. In revenge, they then flooded the mine shaft. It was never reopened.
