In 1572 the castle of Meldert is mentioned for the first time in written sources, but there was already a castle there before. It was demolished around 1845 on the initiative of Countess Vander Noot, who had the current neo-Gothic castle built in its place. The domain was purchased in 1957 by the Chaplains of Labour, who set up the Sint-Janscollege.
Tip: You can go hiking in the Meldertbos nature reserve. The castle park is freely accessible and is managed by Natuurpunt. It is an old forest with a lot of spring flowers with interesting cultural-historical elements. Who knows, maybe a grass snake will cross your path. Or look for the rare red calyx fungus in autumn!
