The name "Amel" has Celtic origins and means "water". The Romans settled in this area; a Roman road passed through the land, and the remains of a Roman villa were excavated in 1868. Gold was washed in River Amel for many centuries during the Celtic and Roman eras.
Ameltal, which is located between Heppenbach and Montenau, was designated a Nature 2000 zone for its numerous very rare species of plants and animals. Red kites (Milvus milvus), kingfishers (Alcedo atthis) and whinchats (Saxicola rubetra) all live in their natural habitats here. Numerous bogs surround the basin of the Amel, yet there are also extensive forests.
Wolfsbusch near Montenau, one of the largest forests in the region, reminds us in its name that wolves still roamed the heights of the Ardennes in the 18th century.
