Square farm The 11000 Virgins

Description

The Square Farm The 11000 Virgins is a beauty of a closed farm. There is a sign on the scene: "IN THE REFUGIE OF THE ELF DUYSENT MAEGDEN 1748" and also "Saint Ursula and the 11000 virgins" above the segmental arch entrance gate, which gives access to the courtyard. The farm thus takes its name from the legend of SInt-Ursula.

According to the "Legenda aurea", Ursula was the beautiful, wise and pious daughter of the Christian king Deontus of Brittany. Her reputation had come to the attention of the King of England. He sent an ambassador to Deontus to propose to her for his only son Aetherius and possibly threaten war if kindness did not lead to a result. Deontus was at his wit's end; He did not want to marry off his daughter to the son of the powerful pagan king who was notorious for his cruelty. But Ursula was mathematically good and advised her father to accept the proposal on condition that the king send her ten very beautiful virgins, each accompanied by 1000 other virgins and on top of that a thousand virgin companions for herself. She also had to be provided with ships to travel with the company. She also stipulated a three-year term for a pilgrimage to Rome and to give the young prince the opportunity to study the Christian faith and to be baptized. The fleet left and docked in Cologne. An angel appeared to Ursula to inform her that after her trip to Rome she would return here and receive the martyr's crown, along with all her companions. They sailed on to Basel and from there it went overland to Rome. There they were welcomed by Pope Cyriacus, according to the writer the nineteenth successor of Peter, but he adds that he was removed from the list of popes because he had decided to give up his pontificate and accompany the virgins back to Cologne. They left back for Cologne. A number of nobles and clergy joined them. When they arrived in Cologne, the city was besieged by the Huns, who killed the entire company, only Ursula was spared because of her great beauty, on condition that she would become the bride of their commander Atilla. Ursula refused and was pierced by Atilla with an arrow. Aetherius, who had meanwhile become king after his father's death, had converted to Christianity. Informed by a divine message, he too travelled to Cologne to meet his bride and was martyred with her. After the massacre, the Huns were driven out by a heavenly army of virgins, composed, of course, of the virgins whom the Huns had just killed.
