Wellen was the first municipality in which a grazing project with these self-sufficient cattle was started, specifically in the slightly south-lying nature area of Broekbeemd. Research has shown that grazing effectively reduces the scrub and has a positive effect on the biodiversity of the grasslands. Thus, buttercups, marsh spiraea, the golden grasshopper, and the vineyard snail can be found in the grazing areas. Buttercups are ranunculus-like plants with strikingly large, butter-yellow flowers. Marsh spiraea stands out due to its fragrant, cream-colored flowers that resemble plumes. Meanwhile, in the non-grazed plots, nettles and cleavers thrive. In the coming years, our Scottish Highlanders will gradually be replaced by equally strong but hornless Galloway cattle. Here in the Grote Beemd, you can also encounter our cattle in some plots. Because they are self-sufficient and live in the area year-round, we ask that you do not feed or pet the animals and always keep a sufficient distance!
