The so-called Owl Forest was once a meadow with poplars. In 1988, the municipality of Kortessem planted a deciduous forest here with ash, oak, black alder, hornbeam, sweet cherry and spindle. In late spring, wood anemone, celandine, muskwort and spotted arum make way for ground elder, yellow avens and broad-leaved wasp orchid. In autumn you can also find earth stars, a type of fungus. If you pay close attention, you can still see some old, cut-off meanders of the Lerebeek. The poplars, meanwhile, were cut down in the winter of 2018. After removing the large branch wood, the forest can recover again and the traces of the machines will quickly fade.
