With the Database Subsurface Flanders you can carry out a virtual drilling anywhere in Flanders. If you do that at this place you will see that the top 10 meters consists of the Tielt Formation, a sand and silt layer deposited in the Paleogene. This stores the water like a sponge. Underneath is a thick layer of clay that pushes the water out of the more sandy layer, known as the Kortrijk Formation. This formation here is more than 60m thick. The place where these two layers meet can be seen here on the northern side of the castle, where a spring pond can be seen.
