There are two reed beds in Kallo: the Rietveld Kallo (47 ha) and the adjacent Groot Rietveld (80 ha). Both are home to numerous protected birds, fish and amusements. You dive into the area via jetties and at the higher bird watching wall you have a beautiful view of the entire area. The Groot Rietveld is older than the Rietveld Kallo. The dense reeds are home to songbirds and endangered herons, such as the bittern. Wild Konik horses graze mainly on the dry, sprayed parts of the area. Their grazing preserves the green carpet of moss in these sandy areas. The defensive moat 'Het Lange Eind' and the redoubt remnant 'Put van Fien' were important connecting elements in the historic belt of forts and defence line around Antwerp.
