In the Middle Ages, these polders belonged to the Norbertine abbey of Saleghem. It was founded by Iwein van Aalst in 1136. Two years later, however, his foundation was transferred to Drongen. Saleghem Abbey became a hermitage: a local dépendance. In Saleghem you can enjoy the remains of the Parma canal. This canal owes its name to the 16th-century general Alexander Farnese, the Duke of Parma. He had it dug to connect Kallo with the Moervaart. In 1584, in defense of Antwerp, the dikes along the Westerschelde were crossed. Ebb and flow were given free rein and deep gullies were created. After the reclamation and the restoration of the dikes, they were left as creeks and wheels. Now it is a beautiful area with a string of large and small creek pools, reed beds, willow forests and swamps
