At the end of 2008, part of the Steenlandpolder was cut up for the construction of the Liefkenshoek railway connection. The remaining space is a varied area with reed beds, ponds and pools. In the triangle formed by the R2 slip road complex, there is a well-hidden, smaller resting area for waterfowl: the R2 plain. From the Steenlandlaan, a wooden staircase leads to a sheltered viewing wall, which you can enjoy unnoticed. A little further on, a network of pools in a sandy terrain provides an ideal habitat for the endangered natterjack toad.
