This German bunker, half sunk into the ground, dates from 1916. It was almost certainly a command post. It was part of the German second line of defence and was built by the 3rd Company of the 27th Armierungsbataillon. The soldiers of an Armierungsbataillon were also pioneers and were responsible for constructing trenches and bunkers.
The exterior walls are 60 to 80 centimetres thick. The thickness of the roof varies between 1 and 1.7 metres. In some parts the concrete has a ribbed structure. This encourages the growth of moss, which offered natural camouflage. The south part of the bunker was a waiting area; the north part was the staff area, with sleeping quarters, a work room and a rest room.
A little further along the Komenstraat in the direction of Zandvoorde, almost hidden by the village's first houses, stands the entrance gate to the Household Cavalry Memorial, which is some 100 metres further along a grassed access path. The Household Cavalry are better known nowadays for their bright red capes and silver helmets whilst on parade in London's Whitehall.
