The parish church of Kieldrecht was originally a massive, single-nave cross church. It was built on the highest point of Kieldrecht and consecrated on June 3, 1713, by the Bishop of Ghent, Monsignor Philippus Van der Noor.
In the vicinity of the church, there was a fence where farmers could tie up their horses during mass. Surrounding the St. Michael's Church used to be a network of narrow streets with numerous houses, inns, and businesses. The alley between Dorpsstraat and the church was known as "Het Gangsken". It was once the most photographed and painted alley in Kieldrecht. Currently, the church stands in the middle of an open market.
